MILK ✦ CIRCUS 2018 Wardrobe Post

Hello! It’s a tradition in the online EGL community to post a yearly wardrobe post showcasing the prints and pieces we’ve collected so far. This post is super late but it’s finally finished! C:

I started wearing Lolita Fashion “officially” in March 2017, the same month I restarted this blog. I had a few things here & there but I wasn’t focused on actually understanding the fashion, wardrobe building, or even getting involved with the community. I bought one of the dresses pictured here in October 2016 to attend a local teaparty a coworker of mine invited me to while I was in another city. (I’m going to write a longer more in-depth “Lolita Journey” post when my anniversary comes up) Beyond that one dress, my wardrobe is from the past 12 months, mostly secondhand, found or acquired through sales, payment plans, luck, and most importantly (as well as fortunately), a stable support structure in my life. I don’t really have any other financially dependent hobbies or personal things to take care of and additionally, “circus” as a theme seems to be trending out of popularity at the moment so that also helped a lot in finding competitive pieces for great prices! As noted, I almost exclusively collect circus themed pieces, so I have a lot of circus prints, stripes, clowns, diamonds, tassels, card suits, and other related themes. I hope you’ll enjoy looking through my Circus Lolita wardrobe!

I already keep a record of everything I own through saving the stock photos whenever I make a purchase, so I was a little hesitant about making this post due to how time-consuming the photo process would be. But seeing other Lolita bloggers I follow post their wardrobes inspired me to give it a try anyway!

For this wardrobe post, I’m including pictures of the dress as well as the stock photo (if it exists) and close up details! The names of some of the items will appear if you hover over them but if you want to know what something is, feel free to ask C: Photo heavy post incoming. This will probably be the most photo heavy post I ever make for this blog. For future wardrobe posts, I will only post new dresses, accessories, & other additions rather than recapping everything once more. Alright, here we go! ^_^

Final Word:

That’s everything for now! As you can see, I’ve acquired a lot of things in a year but I’m very happy with my wardrobe, I think it’s cohesive to exactly what I like while giving me options to try different combinations with the things I already have. There are a few things that don’t fit me in the way that I’d like, such as the Geometric OP & Carnival Applique Skirt, but I’ve been using them as motivation for becoming more physically fit!

I hope you enjoyed looking through my wardrobe, I’m looking forward to seeing what the rest of 2018 brings! One of my New Years Resolutions was to try to focus on finding more circus themed casual pieces so I can slowly transition my daily wardrobe more towards the things I like and really try to capture that “streetwear” vibe on a weekly basis. I have a taste for OTT styles but understanding that it’s just not practical on the day-to-day, especially if I just want to go about my business and not have anyone approach me or comment on what I wear. Now that I have a strong foundation, I think I’ll be able to aim towards where I want to be! Thanks for reading!

What Are Your Lolita New Years Resolutions

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas! It’s the last Monday of 2017, thank you for an amazing year! As part of Lolita Blog Carnival, this week I will be writing about my Lolita New Years Resolutions. While it’s been less than a year since I decided to fully immerse myself in Lolita fashion and begin wardrobe building, I’ve already accumulated my wishlist items shockingly enough! I’ve had to update my Lolita Wishlist and The One That Got Away posts to reflect things I actually ended up getting! So exciting! I’ve already began planning a new round of wishlist items and I’m excited to see what 2018 has in store for me. Onto the resolutions!

Wear Lolita more often

Right now, I try to plan at least one meet-up a month for my local comm but I’d really like to get into the habit of wearing the fashion more frequently and outside of meet ups. Ideally, I’d wear it at least once a week. I’ve been thinking about ways I might be able to incorporate more casual outfits into my work schedule and seeing if that helps with my creativity. It’s definitely hard to balance because while some people are attracted to the more everyday wear-ability of the fashion, the layered and complex coordinate street snaps were the sources of my fashion inspiration!

Find my Wishlist items (again)

As mentioned, I completed the wishlist I had set for myself in 2017 through a lot of digging and luck! I’ve created a new small list of new things I’m actively seeking and I’d love to get them by the end of 2018! The same themes generally apply and will hopefully add more staples to my wardrobe.

Find more subtle circus pieces

Part of what makes it so difficult for me to wear Lolita more often is the natural nature of the circus theme being a very loud, vibrant, and over the top one. Even outfits that I regarded as “Casual” would receive inquiries on whether or not it was a costume. I’d like to find more wardrobe pieces that have more natural or neutral colors that still fit the general aesthetic of what I like while still letting me enjoy the day more readily without being stopped for questions.

Right now one of my favorite “subtle” circus pieces is my Innocent World Stripe Martingale JSK. It’s a soft beige color yet still fits the playful theme. I’m hoping to find more dark colored prints with much less dramatic prints to add to my wardrobe.

Combine Lolita with art

Earlier this year, I made a scepter for one of my coordinates and it really made me remember how fun it is to create things. I’m an artist by occupation during the day but I’ve been struggling lately finding the inspiration to create at at the pace I previously was able to maintain before school and job obligations impacted my motivation. Sometimes, I’ll go months without drawing anything for myself. I’d love to stop this cycle by creating more craft projects for myself and maybe a tangible product for an artist alley. Earlier this year I mentioned that I did artist alley for Tora Con 2017 and made some handmade pins. I’d love to make more official accessories such as rosettes, rings, and pins! I’m especially interested in potentially having wood be the base for these if I ever create them.

My Jester Scepter at completion!

Practice Japanese through Lolita

Japanese was my minor in college and I even studied abroad but the lack of immediate influence on my life has made it so difficult to keep up what I know. One of my goals for 2018 would be to translate and read the Gothic Lolita Bible issues I’ve acquired, as well as purchase new Lolita fashion magazines to keep up with new releases. In addition, I’d like to fully be able to articulate this blog in both languages. I was successful with two of my blog posts (Halloween Shopping / ハロウィーンの買い物 &  Halloween Party 2017 / ハロウィーンのパーティー2017) but it was definitely more time-consuming than I had anticipated. Though I did minor in Japanese in college, as well as spent some time studying abroad in Tokyo, without active study, it’s been difficult retaining some of what I’ve learned. To accomplish this, it may require posting every other week rather than every week as my blog format presently has but I think it’d be worth it.

That’s it for my Lolita New Years Resolutions for 2018! I’d like to do a full year in review once my annual anniversary of restarting this blog occurs. Until then, thanks for reading along with me exploring my self-identity in this fashion.

SWIMMER vs FLAPPER: Biscuit Bag Battle

Happy Monday! Thank you for joining me this week! This week I will be comparing & contrasting Biscuit bags by SWIMMER & FLAPPER.

For some more context, SWIMMER is a popular affordable accessories brand in Japan. They actually announced this year that they would be closing their business due to their production costs increasing beyond what they’re able to handle. This has made a lot of people very distressed including members of the lolita community as SWIMMER is known as a great affordable brand for well-made lolita purses & bags. In fact, in comparison to most brands such as Angelic Pretty, whose bags are often $100+ for typical quality, SWIMMER’s bags are anywhere from $10-$45+ with often durable designs & materials. The SWIMMER biscuit bag has been a lolita favorite ever since its release due to it cute design, space, accessories, and pairing with some popular chocolate, cookie, or tea based lolita dresses. Because tea & cookies are a staple in lifestyle lolita, it’s no surprise why this bag is still popular & often hard to find for a reasonable price & without damages.

SWIMMER Biscuit Bags in Strawberry, Bitter, and Plain / Source: SWIMMER

In contrast, FLAPPER is a brand I have yet to find out a lot of information on. What’s known about them is that they sell their bags & accessories through Tokyo Otaku Mode, a company whose mission is to share Japanese goods & pop culture on a global scale.
I pulled this description from Tokyo Otaku Mode’s website:

“FLAPPER is a Japanese fashion brand known for its unique accessories ranging from all kinds of bags and pouches through wallets, umbrellas, shoes, and functional pieces with unusual and super cute designs. They also have several character series, the most well-known being Buburin, the French bulldog, whose surprised expression can bring a smile to your face anytime, and there’s also Popo-chan, the owl, and the Mofu Neko series. Whether it is biscuits, ribbons, candies, cats, dogs, or other cute animals you are looking for, there’s a chance you will find it here!”

FLAPPER Biscuit 2-Way Duffle Bags in Beige, Camel, & Brown / Source: Tokyo Otaku Mode

In my Tokyo Otaku Mode Haul post I talked about initially desiring the SWIMMER biscuit bag but having a hard time finding it secondhand. I found it in Strawberry (pink) and thus looking at the FLAPPER biscuit bag as a possible alternative for the “plain” (light brown) and “bitter” (darker brown) versions of the SWIMMER bag. Since the time of that post, I actually have found the SWIMMER biscuit bag in the “plain” color as well but for the sake of this review, decided to compare the pink SWIMMER biscuit bag and the beige FLAPPER biscuit bag.

Let’s begin!

At first glance, you can already see a lot of their similarities. My FLAPPER bag has a fold where the bag’s seams are unlike the SWIMMER bag. When I stuff the bag with items, the fold straightens itself out. The SWIMMER front of the bag is all one flat piece so this folding doesn’t happen. The FLAPPER bag also has a set of side hooks for an additional strap for over-the-shoulder looks.

The FLAPPER bag has a gold badge with FLAPPER’s name sewn onto the back of the bag.

Here’s the bottom view of both bags. The SWIMMER bag is both taller & wider than the FLAPPER bag.

Here’s more size comparison side-by-side. The SWIMMER bag clearly wider & more spacious.

The SWIMMER’s bag material is shinier, almost more of a thin pleather. The handles are very lightweight in comparison to the FLAPPER bag. The FLAPPER bag has much noticeably stronger & thicker handles.

FLAPPER Close up

SWIMMER Close up

The SWIMMER bag has the text & biscuit “holes” sewn into the bag. The FLAPPER bag has the text indented into it with actual biscuit “holes” thus giving the bag more depth.

Biscuit “holes”

Additional gem

Spoon & Fork Accessory

THE SWIMMER bag also has the bonus of a super cute additional spoon & fork accessory attached to it. It really helps pull the bag together!

Final Thoughts:
Both bags have an internal pocket for carrying smaller things. For size & carrying capacity, the SWIMMER bag definitely is the winner here. But for durability & flexibility, the FLAPPER bag is very well stitched with a thick pleather with additional over-the-shoulder strap. In regards to cuteness, that’s a toss up! Both are solid awesome bags ^_^ So if you’re having a hard time finding the SWIMMER biscuit bag secondhand, I hand’s down think the FLAPPER biscuit bag is a great alternative while it’s still available through Tokyo Otaku Mode’s website. I haven’t been able to use the SWIMMER bag yet but I did wear the FLAPPER one to a causal movie meet-up recently!

Bag folding not noticeable at all!

I hope you liked this comparison post! Of the two, which bag would you prefer? Let me know in the comments! Thanks for reading!

Edit: 11/19/17

I also got to wear the SWIMMER bag!

Alice and the Pirates Electric Circus in the Moonlight Night

Hello! This week, I’d like to talk about my favorite lolita print, Electric Circus in the Moonlight Night by Alice and the Pirates!

Keeping with the circus theme, it’s absolutely difficult to resist this print. There’s so many lovely details on them that I just had to add them to my wishlist. I think in the end, I’d like to own all the colorways but for now I’ll talk about my acquisition of two of the dresses.

I presently own JSK I in Ivory and JSK II in Black.

If I had to prefer a cut, I would definitely say I prefer the cut of JSK II. It has an elastic backing that makes it so easy to slip on and off without being too uncomfortable. The high empire waist gives my lower torso a lot of freedom and space. It’s full enough to require several petticoats to fill it out. With JSK I, it’s an exact fit. If I were any larger, it would be uncomfortable zipping up the dress by myself just by how the fabric pulls in at the waste. Despite having shirring in the back, there’s just not enough pull in regards to the comfort JSK II provides. Despite this, I like ivory in JSK I the most and prefer black for JSK II! It’s hard not to love JSK I due to it’s design. It’s got the design, buttons, & shape of a circus performer or ring leader while JSK II fits more of the standard lolita look.

So First try-ons!

I don’t have a blouse or tights yet to match the ivory dress, I think I’m leaning towards an ivory blouse and blue diamond OTKs.

More print details:

Overall, I’m so happy to finally have these dresses in my collection!

For a bonus, I actually own the matching Electric Circus pillow! ^^

What’s your favorite print? Let me know in the comments!

Until next week!

Lolita Wishlist

*Updated: 09/03/2017
Happy Sunday!
This weekend I’ve been caught up in all of the commotion about E3! E3 is an annual video game event in which major game companies like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo hold presentations to announce upcoming video game titles or changes to their consoles. I watch it every year and this year is no exception! Between presentations however, I’ve been actively on the hunt for my Lolita Wishlist!

Since Lolita is a collection based hobby in which everything that exists has a finite quantity, finding a specific print, dress cut, or item can be a massive challenge. There’s a few things I have my eye on and a few misses I’ve already experienced. Ultimately, these are absolutely the pieces I feel like I have to acquire to make my collection feel “complete” and although there are always new updates, the more times goes, the harder it is to find older prints & designs!

Wishlist Items

Wishlist Items

At the time of writing this, I actually acquired one of these dream items, which I’ll talk about more further along! My desired theme is still circus and my wishlist now strongly reflects that.

Alice and the Pirates Marching Drum Bag in BLUE

My heart is broken over this Drum bag. It’s still listed on the Bsstb website in all of the colorways except this one ;_; My only chance of getting it now is getting it secondhand from someone else who hopefully won’t mind parting with it.

Alice and the Pirates Starlit Sky Tent and the Secret Circus Troupe OP in BLACK

I have yet to see this cut of dress even sold in the past on lacemarket. I’ve only ever seen it being sold once and in a completely different colorway. It’s such a mystery to me why this cut is rarer as the JSK version is still available online with several people selling it on lacemarket as well. I’m hoping I’ll eventually get lucky but until then, I’ll see scoping out for it!

Alice and the Pirates Memorial Ticket Necklace

You might remember this one from my The One That Got Away post! I’m still actively on the hunt for this wonderfully designed necklace and hope I can find it again online soon

Alice and the Pirates Jesters of the Moon Clown Hat in BLACK

really blew it with this hat. It was available on the Bsstb website when I originally discovered it but I kept putting off buying it. When I was finally ready, to my dismay, it sold out. I’m trying not to lose hope on the chance that someone might find it too impractical or too large and will decide to part with it. ;_;

Surface Spell Freak Show Bag in RED

The blue version of this purse is readily available online but the red version is nowhere to be seen! I’m very interested in the JSK of this print and would love to be able to match this purse with it!

Enchantlic Enchantilly Joker Cat Rings in RED & BLUE

I presently have a few rings from Enchantlic Enchantilly and I have to say they’re among the best rings I’ve ever owned. I love the design, concept, and sturdiness of them. I’d love to have these rings in both colors! Right now I have a badge with the red one!

Alice and the Pirates Eternal Dream Starlight Parade OP in GREEN

Now I originally wanted this dream in the blue & red colorway but after seeing pictures of someone wearing it, I just fell out of love with it. But I just adore the OP of this print significantly more than the JSK and the all black one was too dark for my tastes. This is also the only item out of my Wishlist that I’ve managed to buy so far! I haven’t received it yet but I’m extremely excited. I don’t own a lot of green just in my general wardrobe so I’m excited to come up with good ways to coordinate this.

electric circus black jsk
Alice and the Pirates Electric Circus JSK in BLACK & RED

The color of this JSK continues to elude me. I’ve seen it in brown & green, white & blue, and red & brown! The one time I encountered it, someone else unfortunately beat me to it! I’m determined to own it! >:D

Circus Tent Stripe OTKs
Alice and the Pirates Circus Stripe OTKs in ALL COLORWAYS

The design of these OTKs are just so nice, I don’t mind whatever colorway I happen to find but I’d definitely love to own all of them. I think they’d make fantastic staples that could go with more coordinates outside of my Wishlist.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this blog post! I’ll be sure to update it as I check more off of my collection! In collecting all of these, I will definitely call my collection “complete” and focus more on soft collections, such as finding more themes, finding dream dresses for special events, and of course, being on the alert for new circus-themed prints!
‘Til next week!

*Bonus: Former Wishlist Items I did acquire!*

Angelic Pretty Magical Etolie Apron Skirt in NAVY

I originally saw this on depop and instantly fell in love but missed my chance to buy it. I was so happy when I managed to find it on closetchild for around $60!

Angelic Pretty Fantasy Theater OP in IVORY

Instantly messaged the buyer when they posted it on lacemarket! They allowed me to do a payment plan and even threw in a free white mini top hat! ^_^

*Updated: 09/03/2017

By the writing of this update, I have acquired or reserved all the items off my wishlist! ^^ The Alice and the Pirates Marching Drum Bag and the Enchantlic Enchantilly Joker Cat rings were restocked on their prospective websites. The Alice and the Pirates Jesters of the Moonlight Hat, I ordered directly from Baby and wrote a review of it. The Memorial Ticket Necklace, Surface Spell Freak Show Bag, and Circus Stripe OTKs, I ended up finding secondhand from other lolitas. And as for the Electric Circus in the Moonlight &  Starlit Sky Tent and the Secret Circus Troupe dresses, I ended up picking different cuts and colorways. Electric Circus, I got in black & ivory, both which I reviewed and talked about as well. Starlit Sky, I ended up deciding on the red colorway instead and getting the matching bonnet.

Overall, I’m so thankful to be able to complete my wishlist so soon, as well as have multiple second chances to get items I had initially missed! Now with my backlog taken care of, I can focus on more new & exciting prints as they are released! ^^

Coordinate Planning

Happy Sunday!

This past week I haven’t been up to much so I thought I would spend this week talking about coordinate planning!

Essentially when I plan out lolita coordinates, I make a rough picture of all the pieces involved so I can preview what my coordinates will look like before I make them. You can see previous examples of me doing this in the entry where I talk about the lolita fashion show I participated in.

Why is coordinate planning important?

In my opinion, coordinate planning is very important because ultimately in the end, it saves time and money. Lolita is easily an expensive luxury hobby and even with being thrifty, it’s near impossible to avoid spending a lot of money on a dress by one of the major brands. As new, the dresses are often $200-$400 and they mostly retain their value over time. For this reason, planning helps me avoid spending additional money on things that might match a dress versus spending money on items that will match.

Here are some coordinates I’m presently planning!

Coordinate 1: Alice and the Pirates Twilight Circus OP in Black

Alice and the Pirates Twilight Circus is a dream print of mine and I was lucky enough to get this print in OP version in black. The diamonds stick out the most in the print to me and in the spirit of continuing to be a circus-themed lolita, I thought diamonds would be a good piece to continue throughout the outfit.

I have two bags I’m considering using and I’d really like to lean more towards the drum bag. The bag is the Marching Drum bag also from Alice and the Pirates but it’s presently sold out on their website. Until I can find it secondhand, I believe the Innocent World black Carousel bag will make a decent placeholder.

Coordinate 2: Surface Spell’s Freak Show JSK in Red

I saw Surface Spell’s Freak Show JSK and immediately fell in love! I’m not sure if this is the exact bunny hat I will pursue but I think something similar would be good! Like in the brooch, this print has bunnies as it’s main symbol so I think the mini hat is very appropriate! The continuing theme of white & black stripes as well in the hat, stockings, and parasol I think provide unity to the white blouse with black jabot!

Coordinate 3: Angelic Pretty’s Horror Garden JSK in Ivory

This one is definitely a challenge for me because I’m not completely convinced yet of the blouse or stockings. I think everything else is moving in the right direction. The bat cuffs & boots are really great as continuing the bat wings seen in the vest of the JSK. And I love this SWIMMER bag, I think it’ll go great with the coffin motifs of the print!

As for the bat on the vest, I had a badge custom made for me actually!

The glitter of the bat and the shiny gold thread look wonderful when paired with the dress and Enchantlic Enchantilly bat necklace!

Coordinate 4: Angelic Pretty’s Fantasy Theater OP in Ivory

My favorite type of cake is funfetti and that’s exactly what this dress reminds me of!

This one I have the most amount of work to do on!

I’m almost done with the payment plan for this dress and I couldn’t be more excited to receive it. Ivory is the only colorway I can see myself wearing of this print but it also seemed to be the least common, especially in OP form. I immediately had to get it as soon as I saw it posted on lacemarket!

I’m still working on figuring out a hat of some sort and possibly wrist cuffs and other neck accessories. For an unconventional lolita bag, I actually found a children’s bag from Target! It matches the circus tents in the dress perfectly and was only $9.99! ^^

What do you think of these coordinates? What do you think could be added or removed? Let me know!

Until next week!

The One That Got Away

Happy Sunday!

This past week has been incredibly busy for me. I just left a bad apartment situation and settled down into a brand new apartment! So this week, I’ll talk regretfully about the ones that got away!

When life happens (like moving for example) it can make it hard to focus on lolita, especially if funds are tied up on more important priorities. It especially can be devastating if a dream item happens to appear in the wrong place and at the wrong time.

There are several dream items I have as a list of things I would eventually like to collect. My overall goal as a lolita is not to be sweet, gothic, or classic but rather theme based. My desired theme is “Circus lolita” and whatever prints, accessories, or items may fall under that category. Sticking with this theme has helped me target my spending on prints & accessories I only truly want so I don’t end up growing my wardrobe into something that is unmanageable or filled with dresses I don’t actually want. With that being said, it’s a bit of a challenge because there is now a small category of items to pick from and within that, an even smaller collection of items I actually like.

So onto my first misses!

Alice and the Pirates Memorial Ticket Necklace

I’m very devastated that I missed this one. I was awake late at night and saw when it was first posted but with my move, I was uncertain whether or not I could commit the funds. I debated and debated and by morning at work when I finally decided to just go through with it, it was gone to someone else. There’s no telling when I’ll ever come across it again. For a positive, it did motivate me to think about some personal ideas for accessories.

Alice and the Pirates Electric Circus JSK I

electric circus black jsk

For more expensive prints, I tend to do payment plans and when I saw this, I immediately asked for a payment plan. Unfortunately the down-payment was much larger than what I’m used to so I had to wait but by my next paycheck, it was deleted with no telling how much it actually sold for.

Angelic Pretty’s Melty Chocolate Shoes

melty chocolate

Definitely been eyeing these shoes in L for a while. Every time I’ve seen it pop up on Lacemarket, I can’t put down the money. And it still pops up occasionally but never in my size.

Innocent World Carousel Bag

I eyed this one for days. I asked my friend to loan me the money until my next paycheck so I could purchase it and when she agreed, I was so ecstatic! That feeling suddenly turned to terror when I checked the listing only for it to immediately be purchased by someone else! Fortunately my friend mistook what I said and was the one who bought it! Definitely put me into a brief panic but it worked out in the end and I have this lovely staple in my wardrobe now. 🙂

Overall, it can be hard to determine the timing of when to buy something. Lolita is a collection based hobby and everything made within it is available at a finite quantity. There will always be debate over when is the “right” time to buy something and when something is “rare” it can be even harder to find good affordable deals. I try to find a nice balance between good prices and good timing but I still make mistakes over underestimating how much I truly like something or how unique it is. As I continue on my lolita path, I’m sure I’ll figure out how to get better at it! 🙂

Until next time!

*Update 12/20/17: I managed to get all of the items listed here! I bought the Memorial Ticket Necklace secondhand, found the Electirc Circus JSK in a different cut and color, and got AP’S Melty Chocolate Shoes in pink! I’m happy I got second chances with my near-misses!

My name is Tiffany and I’d thought I’d start with an introduction.

I LOVE shopping. Like. A lot a lot. I very much consider it one of my hobbies.

But a dilemma I constantly face, growing up in a big family, going to college out of state, just general economic strain; I consistently lack the funds to shop the way I would like.

For this reason, I mostly thrift & secondhand shop, along with only shopping when sales are happening. This is how I manage to keep my hobby going without breaking my wallet! C:

The purpose of this blog is to chronicle my many shopping adventures, talk about places to shop and when to look for deals, and of course, a great love for fashion! I’m a big fan of various types of Japanese street fashion, pink, cute, goth, and punk so those are the types of items that will be featured on this blog.

I hope you’re as excited as I am!
