Tea at the Red Bird

Happy Monday! October means a great month of beautiful fall weather & activities! This past weekend, I experienced my first legit tea party with my Lolita community! We planned & reserved out a tearoom in a nearby town and it was hands down, the best meet I’ve ever gone to thus far.

The name of the cafe is called The Red Bird so of course, what better occasion for wearing red? The event was also a good introduction back into ouji for my other half, Bobby, who first tested the waters during the Swap Meet earlier this year for International Lolita Day! I’m really thankful for his participation. A girl in my comm, Emily, made a headband for one of her dresses and it ended up matching Bobby perfectly! He got to borrow it for the rest of the day!

I experimented a little with makeup! I wanted to go for something circus-inspired to match my dress so I tried out some white under eyeliner with red lipstick to imitate a clown smile!

The food was so wonderful, lots of delicious sandwiches & baked goods. The trays had grapes, raspberries, and oranges as well for additional sweetness! At this cafe, you can pick your own tea cup and plate so I naturally selected a full pink set.

After the tea & lunch, we decided to take lots of group & coordinate pictures while the lighting was still good. I shockingly got a lot of great coordinate pictures out of it! Usually I mess up a lot of my pictures by laughing or posing awkwardly but I’m extremely proud of how a lot of these came out (thanks to Bobby for his phone & photo skills!)

20170930_150738

We regularly got stopped by people who were interested in what we were wearing. Lots of photos were taken of us! It was definitely a pleasant contrast to a few weekends ago when I went to the movies & mall with Bobby. I guess because I was wearing lolita alone, it was easier for people to glare and be suspicious. In a group setting, where everyone is clearly having fun, people are laughing, and genuinely enjoying each others’ outfits, I guess for bystanders, the appearance is that we’re a “group” or doing it “for something” is enough to make the reaction more positive and welcoming. I’d like to test out the waters and contrast more public opinions received while in a group setting vs. sole lolita but that’s a different blog post for another day!

My lovely friends!

After photos, we walked down the street to go to a bunch of different stores. We went to multiple antique shops, a comic book shop, and later a gift shop. At the gift shop, I actually managed to find something that I think would be great for my coordinates in the future! It’s a drama mask pin and the design matches the drama mask brass hair barrette I wore during the Swap Meet. I also made a clown friend!

Overall, I can’t say enough positive things about this meet. Perfect weather, perfect food, perfect company! Days like that just really solidify why I love this fashion so much. Beyond just beautiful clothes, there’s a strong sense of community, togetherness, and expression. While I’m sure I would be a lone Lolita in the event I did not have an immediate surrounding community that I could help energize, there’s a lot to be said on how satisfying it is to be able to share your passion with other passionate people. I love being able to just sit and talk and express myself. It’s one of the greatest feelings in the world to me and I’m absolutely looking forward to our next big meet!

Casual Bubble Tea Meet-Up

Hello! Thanks for joining me this week!

Two weekends ago, I hosted a casual meet-up and I wanted to share my pictures! I’ve been trying to host more casual meet-ups to encourage busy or inactive people in the community to participate. There’s a bubble tea place right down the street from my apartment so I thought it would be the perfect place to meet for one or two hours. The bubble tea place also specializes in a sushi bar with lots of delicious arrangements of sushi!

RSVPs for the event were very sporadic but a few people actually ended up showing up! It made me super happy! Because it was casual, I also opted for a more casual look, changing the outfit I wore to the circus slightly. It was definitely interesting walking down the street in lolita fashion, definitely not something I’m used to despite it being a street fashion. I hope I’ll eventually be able to get used to it and do it more often!

I hope you enjoyed reading this little snippet! I hope over time I can host more casual meet-ups and that more people will get involved! Hosting events is definitely stressful, especially when it comes to making sure the guests, location, and activity are in order. However, by the end of it, I think it’s all worth it!

‘Til next week!

SWIMMER vs FLAPPER: Biscuit Bag Battle

Happy Monday! Thank you for joining me this week! This week I will be comparing & contrasting Biscuit bags by SWIMMER & FLAPPER.

For some more context, SWIMMER is a popular affordable accessories brand in Japan. They actually announced this year that they would be closing their business due to their production costs increasing beyond what they’re able to handle. This has made a lot of people very distressed including members of the lolita community as SWIMMER is known as a great affordable brand for well-made lolita purses & bags. In fact, in comparison to most brands such as Angelic Pretty, whose bags are often $100+ for typical quality, SWIMMER’s bags are anywhere from $10-$45+ with often durable designs & materials. The SWIMMER biscuit bag has been a lolita favorite ever since its release due to it cute design, space, accessories, and pairing with some popular chocolate, cookie, or tea based lolita dresses. Because tea & cookies are a staple in lifestyle lolita, it’s no surprise why this bag is still popular & often hard to find for a reasonable price & without damages.

SWIMMER Biscuit Bags in Strawberry, Bitter, and Plain / Source: SWIMMER

In contrast, FLAPPER is a brand I have yet to find out a lot of information on. What’s known about them is that they sell their bags & accessories through Tokyo Otaku Mode, a company whose mission is to share Japanese goods & pop culture on a global scale.
I pulled this description from Tokyo Otaku Mode’s website:

“FLAPPER is a Japanese fashion brand known for its unique accessories ranging from all kinds of bags and pouches through wallets, umbrellas, shoes, and functional pieces with unusual and super cute designs. They also have several character series, the most well-known being Buburin, the French bulldog, whose surprised expression can bring a smile to your face anytime, and there’s also Popo-chan, the owl, and the Mofu Neko series. Whether it is biscuits, ribbons, candies, cats, dogs, or other cute animals you are looking for, there’s a chance you will find it here!”

FLAPPER Biscuit 2-Way Duffle Bags in Beige, Camel, & Brown / Source: Tokyo Otaku Mode

In my Tokyo Otaku Mode Haul post I talked about initially desiring the SWIMMER biscuit bag but having a hard time finding it secondhand. I found it in Strawberry (pink) and thus looking at the FLAPPER biscuit bag as a possible alternative for the “plain” (light brown) and “bitter” (darker brown) versions of the SWIMMER bag. Since the time of that post, I actually have found the SWIMMER biscuit bag in the “plain” color as well but for the sake of this review, decided to compare the pink SWIMMER biscuit bag and the beige FLAPPER biscuit bag.

Let’s begin!

img_7720

Front

At first glance, you can already see a lot of their similarities. My FLAPPER bag has a fold where the bag’s seams are unlike the SWIMMER bag. When I stuff the bag with items, the fold straightens itself out. The SWIMMER front of the bag is all one flat piece so this folding doesn’t happen. The FLAPPER bag also has a set of side hooks for an additional strap for over-the-shoulder looks.

img_7555

Back

The FLAPPER bag has a gold badge with FLAPPER’s name sewn onto the back of the bag.

Here’s the bottom view of both bags. The SWIMMER bag is both taller & wider than the FLAPPER bag.

img_7553

Here’s more size comparison side-by-side. The SWIMMER bag clearly wider & more spacious.

img_7554

The SWIMMER’s bag material is shinier, almost more of a thin pleather. The handles are very lightweight in comparison to the FLAPPER bag. The FLAPPER bag has much noticeably stronger & thicker handles.

img_7549

FLAPPER Close up

img_7548

SWIMMER Close up

The SWIMMER bag has the text & biscuit “holes” sewn into the bag. The FLAPPER bag has the text indented into it with actual biscuit “holes” thus giving the bag more depth.

img_7550

Biscuit “holes”

img_7556

Additional gem

img_7557

Spoon & Fork Accessory

THE SWIMMER bag also has the bonus of a super cute additional spoon & fork accessory attached to it. It really helps pull the bag together!

Final Thoughts:
Both bags have an internal pocket for carrying smaller things. For size & carrying capacity, the SWIMMER bag definitely is the winner here. But for durability & flexibility, the FLAPPER bag is very well stitched with a thick pleather with additional over-the-shoulder strap. In regards to cuteness, that’s a toss up! Both are solid awesome bags ^_^ So if you’re having a hard time finding the SWIMMER biscuit bag secondhand, I hand’s down think the FLAPPER biscuit bag is a great alternative while it’s still available through Tokyo Otaku Mode’s website. I haven’t been able to use the SWIMMER bag yet but I did wear the FLAPPER one to a causal movie meet-up recently!

Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum: Patches, Antiques, & More

Hello hello! This past weekend I visited Buffalo & Lockport with my boyfriend. ^_^ The Buffalo Lolita community planned a meet-up for the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum and some Rochester lolitas decided to join in! I was debating going but my boyfriend, Bobby, expressed needing to go to Lockport to do an errand for his mother. With the errand & the meet, we decided to turn it into a full trip!

We rented a hotel room & spent some time going to the Buffalo Zoo and then shopping at Walden Galleria. At the mall, we went to a few places and I got some new patches, notepads, makeup, & a pop figure.

At the Carrousel Museum, we got to learn about the history of carousels and how this company made most of the carousels around the United States. It was interesting to see how they went from completely wooden horses to half-wood/half-metal horses, to fiberglass horses. I loved the designs of so many of them!

At the end of the walkthrough. my friends and I got to ride the large carousel together! ^_^

everyone was super cute >_<

Before we went in, I managed to get some good selfies and Bobby took some wonderful outfit shots for me! This is my first time wearing this dress out so I was super excited. I bought them from my Wunderwelt Order recently. I had trouble with the bonnet but one the girls in my comm, Lauren (who I went with to the Memorial Art Gallery) helped me secure it! ^_^

Memorial Art Gallery Hangout

Hello hello~
This past Sunday I went to the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery with one of my friends from my comm!

We went to listen to the Italian Baroque Organ the museum has on constant display.
You can find out more information about the organ on the Memorial Art Gallery’s website! 🙂

The person playing the organ was just wonderful. She showed us the organ’s barrows and talked about the origin of the organ in regards to the museum. Apparently the organ was in pieces and being sold as furniture before it was saved, restored, and acquired by the museum! I found this very cool video by the University of Rochester, which features a time-lapse of the Organ being assembled in 2005!

There was also an interesting exhibit on the Female Gaze as well as permanent exhibits.We were so busy chatting, I completely forgot to take new pictures of any of the art! ^^;

We did however, take pictures in front of the organ 😀

International Lolita Day – Swap Meet & Picnic

Hello!
This past Sunday I hosted my very first lolita meetup!

To celebrate International Lolita Day, my community had a swap meet & picnic!

I was really nervous because it was my first time ever hosting a meetup and I hadn’t met most of my comm yet. On top of that, the weather forecast predicted thunderstorms for a few days.  I made sure to buy tarps to put up in the picnic shelter, but fortunately despite raining in the morning, it cleared up very quickly and was sunny for the rest of the day! (*´▽`*)

One lolita brought loose tea and it was definitely one of the most refreshing experiences I’ve had in a while. Drinking fresh hot tea on a cool rainy morning was such a pleasant feeling. Another lolita brought these very delicious ice cream cone s’mores!

Because lolita has become such a large part of my life, I’ve introduced my boyfriend, Bobby, to ouji fashion. He was thoughtful enough to consider trying it out for the picnic so I made sure we took a picture together even though we didn’t exact match. It’s my dream to color coordinate something wonderful with him!

Ultimately I ended up selling 3 blouses & a pair of wristcuffs! I swapped and got a blouse, a cutsew, bloomers, black otks, and a very lovely black Innocent World JSK!

Overall, it was a massive success and I’m very thankful I got to meet my comm on such a lovely day!

Coordinate Planning

Happy Sunday!

This past week I haven’t been up to much so I thought I would spend this week talking about coordinate planning!

Essentially when I plan out lolita coordinates, I make a rough picture of all the pieces involved so I can preview what my coordinates will look like before I make them. You can see previous examples of me doing this in the entry where I talk about the lolita fashion show I participated in.

Why is coordinate planning important?

In my opinion, coordinate planning is very important because ultimately in the end, it saves time and money. Lolita is easily an expensive luxury hobby and even with being thrifty, it’s near impossible to avoid spending a lot of money on a dress by one of the major brands. As new, the dresses are often $200-$400 and they mostly retain their value over time. For this reason, planning helps me avoid spending additional money on things that might match a dress versus spending money on items that will match.

Here are some coordinates I’m presently planning!

Coordinate 1: Alice and the Pirates Twilight Circus OP in Black

coord2

Alice and the Pirates Twilight Circus is a dream print of mine and I was lucky enough to get this print in OP version in black. The diamonds stick out the most in the print to me and in the spirit of continuing to be a circus-themed lolita, I thought diamonds would be a good piece to continue throughout the outfit.

I have two bags I’m considering using and I’d really like to lean more towards the drum bag. The bag is the Marching Drum bag also from Alice and the Pirates but it’s presently sold out on their website. Until I can find it secondhand, I believe the Innocent World black Carousel bag will make a decent placeholder.

Coordinate 2: Surface Spell’s Freak Show JSK in Red

coord6

I saw Surface Spell’s Freak Show JSK and immediately fell in love! I’m not sure if this is the exact bunny hat I will pursue but I think something similar would be good! Like in the brooch, this print has bunnies as it’s main symbol so I think the mini hat is very appropriate! The continuing theme of white & black stripes as well in the hat, stockings, and parasol I think provide unity to the white blouse with black jabot!

Coordinate 3: Angelic Pretty’s Horror Garden JSK in Ivory

coord1

This one is definitely a challenge for me because I’m not completely convinced yet of the blouse or stockings. I think everything else is moving in the right direction. The bat cuffs & boots are really great as continuing the bat wings seen in the vest of the JSK. And I love this SWIMMER bag, I think it’ll go great with the coffin motifs of the print!

As for the bat on the vest, I had a badge custom made for me actually!

The glitter of the bat and the shiny gold thread look wonderful when paired with the dress and Enchantlic Enchantilly bat necklace!

Coordinate 4: Angelic Pretty’s Fantasy Theater OP in Ivory

coord5

My favorite type of cake is funfetti and that’s exactly what this dress reminds me of!

This one I have the most amount of work to do on!

I’m almost done with the payment plan for this dress and I couldn’t be more excited to receive it. Ivory is the only colorway I can see myself wearing of this print but it also seemed to be the least common, especially in OP form. I immediately had to get it as soon as I saw it posted on lacemarket!

I’m still working on figuring out a hat of some sort and possibly wrist cuffs and other neck accessories. For an unconventional lolita bag, I actually found a children’s bag from Target! It matches the circus tents in the dress perfectly and was only $9.99! ^^

What do you think of these coordinates? What do you think could be added or removed? Let me know!

Until next week!

Circus Date

Happy Sunday!

This past Saturday, I went on a date with my boyfriend to a travelling circus!

It was amazinggg! At the beginning, all of the performers came out for a nice introduction.

img_5917

I really wish I had gotten better pictures of the clowns but their performances were really good! They barely communicated with words and relied a lot on their physicality to convey certain jokes.img_5923

The acrobats were easily the most amazing part. At one point, one of the acrobats was hanging by her neck from a hoop strung from the ceiling! The jugglers stood on top of each other and threw pins at each other!

img_5926

img_5946

img_5950

And seriously, another acrobat shot a bow & arrow with her foot and popped a balloon!

img_5955

But possibly one of the coolest parts of the circus was the motorcyclists who drove around in a metal globe.

I dressed in a lolita coordinate for the occasion. I wore Magial Etolie since it fit well with the circus theme and also matched my camera strap!

Tora Con 2017

Happy…Monday?

Why am I posting on a Monday? Because this Saturday & Sunday was Tora Con!

Tora Con is an annual anime convention run by the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Anime Club. I’ve been a staff artist for Tora Con for the last 3 years and it was time to see everyone’s hard work come to fruition!

I dressed up as Kagome from InuYasha! I found a bunch of other InuYasha cosplayers! ;v;

18033287_1574244895954047_4587621992362778237_n (1)

And my boyfriend was Ryuji from Persona 5! We’ve been playing Persona 5 together since its release and so it was very special to me that we got to meet two of the voice actresses from it!

C-DvcUkUAAA9Wc9

This was my first test run with selling merchandise in the artist alley. I drew & colored some handmade pins. It was a good experiment to see if my handmade art would sell, if I avoided drawing fan art and just focused on my concepts, what would happen? I sold all but 4 items! That absolutely means a lot to me and I can’t wait to keep improving on my pin making skills!

It was a very exciting I got to meet up with some local lolitas at a maid cafe event!

Fashion Show!

Happy Easter!

This past week was a very very busy one but a fun one none the less!

I got to participate in a fashion show while in lolita!

My alma mater’s Asian Culture Society hosts a fashion show every year to showcase the different traditional & modern fashions of Asia. A lolita in my community asked if I could participate and I absolutely accepted!

I spent some time planning out my coordinate because I really wanted to both represent lolita well and finally push myself out of complete newbie territory. I really wanted to avoid mistakes like having mismatched colors, not wearing a petticoat, etc.

I had recently purchased Sleepless Masquerade in Navy by Alice and the Pirates so I thought it would the perfect opportunity.

Sleepless Masquerade

Initially, I wanted to go in the direction of navy tights and white boots but after talking we my friend, decided to aim for ivory tights and gold heels. The lolita who invited me to participate let me borrow (and later buy ;u;) her navy wrist-cuffs! I also got a mask to continue the masquerade motif but ultimately did not end up wearing it.

I had to stay backstage for the fashion show but everyone was dressed so amazingly, I wish I had gotten pictures. My best friend took some pictures of me on-stage!
